Evaluation

Media evaluation
I chose to create a music video to an already establishing song. I chose 'Demi Lovato Skyscraper' which takes on the pop genre. I took many aspects of her video and recreated them with my own creative ideas, for example I used a natural location within her video. I also chose to base my music video on a message which was the issue of teen issues such as body image and staying strong against negative comments which was the main idea behind Demi Lovato's original video for 'Skyscraper'. After several planning and research stages I went on to create a six panel digipak and webpage for my imagined artist; Ella Clark. I will evaluate the effectiveness of my products and contrast this with audience feedback. I will also evaluate the relationship between the codes and conventions of my genre and my products and how my products inforce these codes and conventions. I will also look at my use of digital media in creating these products and how effective digital media is in relation to the marketing of a digital product.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Performance based music videos are what I researched more because from my own experience this is the music video I am used to seeing on music channels or from pop artists that I like. During my research I saw how performance based pop music videos had very fast paced editing with a lot of cuts rather than fades, this was something I wanted to replicate in my video as the song I had chosen wasn’t the typical dance track but it did have a beat which allowed me to add cuts. Whilst researching I looked at Rihanna 'We Found Love' music video and saw how she used cuts to reflect location changes but these cuts followed the beat of the music and this was something that I used as I did have several location changes and the beat of the music was easy to cut my footage too.

The different locations shown in my music video. These location were cut to the beat of the music and reflected a location change just like the Rihanna 'We Found Love' music video.

The first location shown was the natural location. I wanted this to be the most dominant location within my music video as the location for the original 'Skyscraper' video was a natural desert location. I chose a natural location as to me it connotes natural beauty, something which is undisturbed by the urban location and I wanted this to reflect the idea of natural beauty amongst teens and addressing the issue of using makeup and media technologies such as photoshop as a way of making beauty rather then natural beauty.

Another convention of my genre was that many music videos used dancing as a way of showing performance. I considered doing this in my video but went against it as the song I used wasn’t a dance track but was more a slow paced song which I thought would be best using lip syncing and also using instruments to reflect more of a performance. I did use a piano in my final music video and again I believed that this enforced the performance within my music video.

This screenshot is from the Beyonce 'Single Ladies' video were she keeps the video simple with a dance routine and has added a black and white affect. This is a pop music video with the use of dance as a way of showing performance. I wanted to change this idea of performance and use musical instruments to show the performance element of my pop music video.

This is a screenshot of the piano used in my music video and instead of showing a long shot with the full piano in view I wanted to create a close up for visual use. I had the performers image reflected in the piano to keep the
audiences attention on the main character (the artist) within the music video. And I wanted them to realise the artist was playing the piano and therefore performing. This reinforces the idea that the music video is a performance video with an element of narrative but the artist is the central character.

Another convention of the pop genre is the use of bright colouring and distinctive styling of clothes. I looked at LMFAO ‘Sorry ForParty Rocking’ music video which plays on the two as LMFAO include very bright colours for this music video as well as their famous animal print leggings which they are known for. I decided to go against the use of bright colouring as again this didn’t suit my choice of song as it was more slow and after looking at the original video for ‘Skyscraper’ I liked the way Demi Lovato had used neutral colours for costume and backdrop therefore I challenged this convention.

I dressed my performer in a look that I wanted to make her look dominant. At the start of my music video I wanted the audience to get the feeling that my performer was trapped in her own body, not liking the way she looked, I decided to use the opening shot of my performer dressed in a black and white stripped t-shrit. I used this t-shirt as I wanted it to connote been trapped and stereotypical a prisoners costume is a black and white stripped overall, I wanted it to feel as though the performer was prisoned within her own body.

I used the black leather jacket to reflect dominance, almost like an authority figured and I used this because towards the end of the narrative the performer had realised that negative comments don't matter and that it's about how you feel about your body that matters. The mise-en-scene was an easy way to reflect ideas as it acts a a visual and therefore runs with the visual use of the music video. I also realised that from target audience research leather jackets are in season and many of my target audience were this item of clothing as fashion and therefore I made my performer more relatable to my target audience so they can engage with the character and the music video more.
Also in this shot I used a low angle medium shot to show her dominance and the shot is made to feel as though the audience is therefore looking up at the performer and therefore aligns the performer and the audience more and brings them into the diegesis of the music video world.

Another conventions of a music video would be the constant use of close ups when the performer is singing and therefore performing.

Another conventuon of the pop genre is the use of close ups to reflect emotions. In my music video I created a lot of close ups of props and my artist to reflect the solom mood which the song portrays. Close ups are also used for performance sequences to show the passion the artist has for the song that they are performing. My first performance shot is of the artist stood against a blank wall performing at a low angle close up shot, I used a low angle shot to again reflect dominance. I used a blank wall after watching the Justin Bieber 'Baby' video in which he performers against a blank background, using a blank background keeps the focus on the artist instead of the action on screen.

To establish a narrative and a performance style music video I used a black and white filter for the narrative parts and colouring for a performance part. I used black and white during the narrative as the narrative was meant to reflect a dark period in the performers life and to reflect the mood which the performer was replicating, I used facial expressions and actions such as crying to show how the peformer was in a despressive mood, her clothing also reflect this. I tried using colouring for these narrative scenes but it didn't work as effectivley and therefore I changed it to black and white.

In this scene I used the mise-en-scene of a typical teenagers bedroom with music artists posters in the background. I did this so that the audience would be aligned with the character more as this makes her more relatiable.
I used this shot of the girl looking into the mirror. The girl is centre framed within the shot but the reflection of her is visible in the mirror. The girl been centre framed aligns the audience with the character within the narrative as well as putting their focus on her rather then the mise-en-scene of the bedroom. The reflection in the mirror represents the girl hating what she sees everytime she looks into the mirror and therefore reinforcing this idea of been body and self image concious.

I used a shot of the girl crying so that the audience were fully aware of how the girl felt and therefore sympathised with her more. The framing of this shot shows a clear gap in the right of the screen with the girl positioned more to the left of the frame. I wanted to create that visual gap to connote something missing in the girls life and a gap in her existance. I used a low angle after trying a high angle which didn't look visually right. I also didn't want to use a head on shot as I wanted the bedroom and mirror interior to be still visible within the shot.

Also in this scene I used a visual of a diary with words that I wanted the audience to see more. I tried using an effect so that the words literally jumped out of the page or came into focus but this didn't work as well as just making the writing bold.

In my location I used four locations. The first been the girls bedroom, the second been the music room, the third been the room with the blank wall and the fourth been my natural location. During planning the first location I visited and wanted to use the most was the natural location and this was due to the fact that I'd seen the Demi Lovato 'Skyscraper' original video and she uses a natural location, this and the fact that I liked the idea of natural beauty. I visited the natural location during summer time before planning and research officially started. I took some images and whilst planning my storyboard I used them as a visual for the shots I intended to use in the natural location.
The first shot within my music video is of the natural location and the performer sat on a bench over looking a lake. I used this shot for the first shot as I wanted the natural location to be visible from the start as this is where the majority of my music video is shot. The natural location denotates a woodland full of trees. I wanted the natural location to connote natural beauty of an unspoilt world to reflect my overall theme of accepting the real you and not what the world wants of you.

In my music video I used panning shots of the natural location as well as shots of my peformer in the natual location.

This shot shows the natural location as well as other natural elements such as the sun creeping through the trees. I didn't intend on using a shot like this but when I arrived at the location I realised this would be a good shot and decided to film a tilt down follow by a panning tacking shot of the performer. This shot works well and is a good visual of my natural location and the natural surroundings.
I also realised that this visual could connote the idea of a new day or the re-birth of life as the performer passes out of the light and into view. Or it could also act as a visual for the 'light at the end of the tunnel' phrase which again inforces the meaning I created behind my music video.

For these two shots I used a fade to reprsent a passing of time almost as if she's walked from one point in the location to the next. The two shots together but they also provide a match on action as the girl is walking in the first shot and the second shot and her body compision within the frame matches.

I used the two walking shots as to represent her walking around and having time to think about everything as I know that this is sometimes how people use to deal with problems by having time to reflect and these walking shots reflected that time.

In both shots the performer is centred framed which starts in a long shot. I decided to centre frame the performers to keep the audience attention on the performer as well as the surroundings.

In this second shot the girl walks into the camera and stops in a mid shot as she sings the rest of the lyrics to the camera. The camera stayed static for this shots but the performer was instructed to walk towards the camera and stop in a mid shot. I decided to have the performer singing as she walked towards the camera just to reinforce the idea of a performance based music video.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

When producing my ancillary texts I wanted to keep a continuous theme running through my album. To do this I used my location images which reflected the natural location used within the video. These images helped continuity as the music video and albumk had a running theme of the natural location and therefore a running theme throughout my media texts.

I strated researching album covers from exisiting pop music artists and I explained in my research why I liked those album covers. My main bases for mine was the image of the artist been bold and standing out on the front cover. For an image like this I looked at Taylor Swift's 'Red' album cover. I looked at all the elements of that album cover that I liked and the main reason for myn liking was the album name reflected the image on the cover as the album name was 'Red' and Taylor's lip colour was red, this dawned on me that the red lip colour could connote her love and passion for singing as it was placed on her mouth. I liked how the red colour theme linked the artist and the album together therefore establishing to the target audience that the album belonged to the artist featured on the front image.

Taylor Swift's album cover appealed to me because of the illustrative link between the album cover and the artist on the front cover. The colour red also appealed to me as I like the idea that red connotes passion and love and therefore passion and love for music or the album. Also red is a strong bold colour and will stand out if placed on a CD rack in a store. I image on Taylor Swift's album cover is a simple close up with the lips hightlighted because they're in a bolder colour and therefore stand out against the paler colouring of her face and backdrop.

I tried to replicate the image of Taylor Swift's album cover. I used the blank backdrop and tried to replicate the stance and the facial positioning with the frame. I replicated the lip colouring the match the album name. However my models hair is also a redish brown colour and therefore I wanetd her hair to stand out more as well. I blured the models hair more to give the effect of a glow to the image. I placed the album title in the bottom right of the screen just like Taylor Swift's album cover, I did this to distinguish the image from the album title but also keeping them quite close in proximity.

For the back cover I decided to use a black and white image which I was initally going to use as a draft and only a draft but after conducting some audience feeback I realised that having a coloured image on the front and a black and white image on the back worked well. The only bit of colouring on the back image is the colour of the models lips, some of the single name titles and the title of the album been red and therefore following the theme throughout both the front and back covers.

On both the front and back cover I emphasised the red colouring on the models lips. I did this because the model was wearing red lipstick but it wasn't standing out and wasn't as bold as I would have liked. I emphasised the colouring to make them stand out and to look more appealing but to also follow the continuity, I did this using photoshop.

Also a part of my ancillary texts I chose to produce a webpage for my artist. I started by researching exisiting artists webpages and comparing and contrasting the conventions of those web designs. I looked at the colouring of the webpages, I looked at the different navigation pages to grasp an idea of how mine should be laid out and what conventions of a webpage I needed to include.

I created my webpage using WiX after hearing from other students about how easy it was to use but also how it was free to use. I started designing my webpage by creating a homepage to which I chose the colour theme red (like the album cover), white, black and pink (pink to reflect my artists girly nature). I also had to chose a name for my imagined artist and found this challenging. To come up with a name I used a name generator found on google by typing in 'pop star name generator' and been directed to a webpage called 'Rum and Monkey' it was easy and free to use and came up with the name 'Ella Clark' to which I later added onto my album cover.

After coming up with a name I began designing my homepage of my website. I started by editing the image on the front screen by uploading my album cover as the front image. I saw this during my webpage researching as Olly Murs, Justin Bieber and various other artist also followed the album cover image route and I liked this as away of advertising my product. I also edited tour information and latest news information on my homepage. I kept the red housestyle and
made sure to use the colour red whenever possible just to keep linking my webpage to my album cover and my music video.

Another way of advertising my artist was by adding the music video to the music page of my website and this provides another source for fans to watch the video as well as YouTube. It also occured to me that all of the webpages I'd researched used the same technique and therefore I wanted to use it for mine.

I also added a chairty page. Initally the chairty page wasn't a part of the design that WiX had provided me with but I felt as though, from research and my own experiences, that I wanted to include a charites page. I researched some charites by looking at exisiting music artists charites on their webpages, in the end I came up with the charity 'Pencils Of Promise' as this is a charity I follow myself but also saw that many pop artists are spokes people for the charity.

After creating my webpage, album cover and music video I started thinking of ways to market my product. I knew about the power of social media as I myself use social networking and know just how many people use the likes of Facebook and Twitter as forms of advertising. Also through research I saw that existing artists were using social networking as a way to connect with fans and advertise their products to them. I myself follow artists on Twitter who are constantly updating their tweets with links to music videos or links to iTunes in order for fans to buy their album or single, I have also seen where artists will keep their 'BIO' information as an advertisement for there latest single.

This is an example of an artist using there 'BIO' information to advertise there latest album or single. Here Justin Bieber uses his BIO to advertise his new album Believe but also makes the Believe a hashtag which his fans will later hashtag and make a trending topic, this means more people will see it.

Here is an example of Justin Bieber using his twitter to promote his latest charity movement. Her he's asking fans through social networking to help the charity but the way he addresses them it feels, to the fans, that it's on a direct bases.

Here is Justin Bieber promoting his new video 'All Around The World'. Twitter allows fans to retweet the artist and therefore reach out to a wider audience.
This an example of Justin Bieber retweeting VEVO (the video promoter for YouTube). This is an example of Justin Bieber trying to spread the message that his video is been released and through what media institution.
This shows how many followers Justin has and the wide audience he is reaching out too. When he tweets about a latest album or a latest video it reaches an inital audience of more then 37 million and therefore twitter is easy, free and reliable to promote a media product.
This is Cody Simpson's twitter page were he uses his account to promote his music and tour dates. The tweet is informing fans and followers that his new single will be avaliable on iTunes on the 23rd April. In this tweet he's informed them what day the single will be out but has also given fans anf followers the means to download the music via iTunes.
This tweet is from Cody Simpson's twitter also and shows how he promotes his tour tickets but also provides a link to a verified account were tickets can be bought.
This is an example of Katy Perry's twitter account and how she uses her 'BIO' information to provide a link to her website. The link means that fans can be provided with an alternate source for information about their favourite artist.

This is an example of a twitter verified account. The verified tick allows fans to know that the artist is the person that they say they are and therefore the information shared on the account is a real source of information.

This also shows how Justin Bieber has retweeted an online forum about his latest collaboration with Will.I.Am and this tweet his about the teasers for their latest video with a weblink for fans and followers to click on and watch the teasers in anticipation for the final video.

[I took these screenshots using an app I downloaded on my smartphone, the app is called screen munch.]

I created this Prezzi to show the power of social networking.

In relation to my ancillary text, music video and webpage I did use social networking in order to draw attention to the power of the internet and social networking as a whole. On my webpage's music page I created a 'share' button were fans could share the video via Twitter or Facebook but I also created links to iTunes in order for fans to order the album or single.

Here are my icon buttons to share the video via Facebook, Twitter or Google+. These buttons allow fans to upload and share the video via their personal accounts on social networking sites.

This screenshot shows my album cover on an iTunes homepage with an icon iTunes button which directs fans to buy the album off iTunes.

Another way to advertise my product would be to put it onto my webpage for another source for fans to access the music video.
From research I saw how estbalished artists would post links via Twitter for their new music video. I also saw that on there webpage they would feature their Twitter account with a 'latest tweets' section and therefore I used that on my webpage.

This is my 'latest tweets' section on the hompage of my website. I used this due to research and seeing how established artists do this. Social networking (as discussed) is a powerful tool  but it also means that one piece of information, such as new video links or ticket sale links, can be shared with millions of people with the click of a button. Producing a social networking page for my artist would mean that links to important information could be share but by also advertising my website link in the 'bio' box via Twitter I could advertise my website were fans can get information.

Another way of advertising my album would be to put it on the iTunes homepage which I did by editing my image onto an exisiting image of an iTunes homepage. Using iTunes has proven the best way for fans to download music and there is also an iTunes download chart which show which artists have made it to number one. iTunes has sold over 26 billion songs since it's release in 2003. ITunes was also the most popular download site for my target audience who prefered to download music rather then having a physical product. Itunes is the cheapest way to download music on the internet and it also means you can have many copies, i.e. for a phone, for your iPod, for an MP3 player and on your laptop for only one purchase.

The original iTunes homepage

My customised iTunes homepage advertising my product as a download. I created this customised homepage through the use of Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Another way of advertising my product was to sell the album as a physical product as well as a download. After creating my album cover I printed it out and placed it in a CD cover just to see how my product would look as a physical product. I also took some pictures of people who fit into my target audience holding the CD.

These images show my product as a physical product to which my album would be sold. I chose to make it downloadable but also to make it a physical product as it provides a wider audience as well as making the availability to all. The advertisement for my album would be through my webpage as well as through social networking sites.

3. What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

After uploading my final draft I posted the link the video on blogger and saw how my views increased. Through the research and production of my music video the views on blogger have increased slightly but when I'd uploaded my view they increased by at least 100 views. I was impressed and decided to upload my video to Facebook.

I was possible reaching out to a an audience of 200 people but unfortunatley the video had been removed from YouTube without my knowing. The comments on my video were from fellow students telling me that the video had been removed because of copyright issues.

I thought about a solution and decided to upload the video via an alternate site.

I uploaded the video via another site called VideoBam. The video again could reach a potential audience of 200 people. Instead of commenting on the link via Facebook my friends were telling me face to face how good they thought my music video was and how much they liked it.

Another means of audience feedback came from creating two videos and some questionnaires. I asked two people to participate in video analysis and asked five people to fill out questionnaires, one for my music video and one for my ancillary texts.

My first question was 'What features of this music video do you like?' Melissa picked up on the fact that she liked how the video started off in black and white because it got across the emotions the performer was feeling, from this audience feedback it was clear that from a first viewing Melissa did pick up on the fact that I had used black and white to connote the performers negative feelings. I then asked 'What features of this video don't you like?' And she stated that there was nothing that she didn't like. I then asked 'Did you think the performer was right for the role and why?' She stated that she thought the performer was right for the role as she didn't come across to dramatic but showed the correct emotions for that the performer was trying to portray. I then asked 'How would you view the music video at home?' Melissa responded with viewing the music video via YouTube. I then asked 'What genre of music video do you think this is? And how do you know this?'' To which Melissa responded with that she thought it was a pop music video because of the tone of the song and that the video was more performance based.
From this response my target audience member has identified clearly the genre of video this is but has also confirmed that she noticed the visuals I was trying to reflect in my video and therefore I am happy with the response.

My first question was 'What featues of this music video do you like?' To which Sarah replied she liked the black and white theme as it reflected the performers emotions. My second question was 'What features of this video don't you like?' to which Sarah replied that she replied that there was nothing about my video that she didn't like. The third question I asked was 'Do you think the performer was right for the role and why?' To which she replied yes because the performer reflected the right emotions throughout the video that fitted with the song. My fourth question was 'How would you view the music video at home?' To which she replied through YouTube or through the artists webpage. The last question I asked was 'What genre of music video is this? And how do you know this?' To which she replied pop and because of the performance element of the instruments used.

I also conducted five audience questionairres to which I stuck to people within my target audience, the results conclude:

  • 100% of people recongnised that the music video was within the genre of pop and most said they knew this through the perfomanced based music video or because of the artists look within the video.
  • 100% of people said that the performer was effective because of the emotions she put into her performance.
  • 100% of people said that they would access the video via YouTube from her home device. And two of those people said that that they would also access the video through the artists webpage and through social networking sites which would prove my one form of marketing discussed above.
  • When asked what features of the music video don't they like three people commented. The first person that she didn't like the low angle as it didn't reflect the artists emotions. I would overcome this by not including the low angle or including it and then maybe zooming into her face. The second person responded that they didn't like the fact that dance wasn't used. I would overcome this by maybe adding contemporary dance to the video to reflect the slowness of the music. The third person responded with that they didn't like that they weren't a large range of locations or costumes used. I would not address this issue as I thought they were a large range of costume changes for each location used, I also thought the locations were appropriate to the music video.
I also conducted questionairres based on my anciallary texts. The conclusion of those anciallary questioairres are below:
  • When asked 'How would you expect to buy this album?' 100% said they would buy it through iTunes as they prefer downloads and 100% of my audience also said stores which proves the theory of selling it as a download and selling it as a physical product.
  • 100% of my audience identified it as been from the pop genre.
  • When asked 'Is the album name and artists name clear?' 100% of people replied with yes and because of the colouring and size of the font it stands out more.
  • When asked 'Do you like the colours used on the album cover?' 100% yes and because the colouring of the album was bright and one repleid with that red symoblises passion.
  • When asked 'What features of the album cover do you like?' Four people replied with the close up was very effective as it aligned the audience with the artist more. Two of the five replied that the colouring was what they liked the most as it was a nice bright colour.
I also looked at my views via YouTube and these are the results:
This shows that I have 67 views and that 40 minutes of my music video has been watched so far.

This shows my YouTube demographics analysis it shows that my video has been watched by females and no males which would prove that my video is been made avaliable to my target audience.
It also shows that my video are been discovered using mobile phoen devices or embedding videos which would be due to me embedding my video to facebook or blogger.

This shows how my video has been viewed by my target audience of 13-17 year olds. This would prove that my video has been successfully marketed.

4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Blogger:

I used blogger all throughout my planning, research, production and evaluation phases of my media project. Blogger was used as a way of organising and posting posts on to a web forum.
I liked using blogger as it meant all my work was organised in one place and I never had a problem with the webpage itself. I liked the way all my work was organised  by date and looked presentable.
Blogger was free to use and also easy to use and if any help was required then a tutorial was provided or I could ask another student who was also using blogger as a means help.
The one element of blogger I didn’t like was the fact that images and videos were hard to upload. If a video was to be uploaded from YouTube or uploaded via an embedding system then it was fine but uploading a video direct from your desktop was harder as it had to be below a certain number of MB and therefore didn’t work as effectively.

Youtube:

I used YouTube again through all phases of planning, research, production and evaluation. I created my YouTube page in order to upload a video to my blog.
I also used YouTube in order to help me look up existing music videos and embed them on my blog for a means of visual research. I also used YouTube in order to watch tutorials to help me edit on Photoshop for my ancillary texts.
The one problem with YouTube was when I was uploading my drafts, animatic or my final edit the music wouldn’t play on my video as it was not under the copyright. I did try asking for permission to use the video but that wasn’t granted by the music institution from which the music was produced. This one problem was my only problem throughout the creation of my music video as it stopped me from gaining audience feedback as well as making the viewing of my music video difficult.

Photoshop:

I had previous experience of using Photoshop and this helped in order for me to create my ancillary text. I only used Photoshop for my ancillary texts but what I did use gained me vital skills in editing an image.
The first editing tool I learnt was that you must create a background copy of the original image so it isn’t spoilt by editing. This was something I usually forgot but was reminded of.
The second editing tool I learnt was how to change the colour of an image such as too black and white or even changing the colour of just one facial feature such as the lips in my ancillary text.
Photoshop was easy to use after a lesson on using Photoshop but they were parts when I’d forget something and have to turn to a YouTube video tutorial for help or even asking Ray the media technician to help.
Overall Photoshop was good and easy to use and taught me vital editing techniques to use.

 Prezzi:

I used Prezzi during the planning and research phase as well as a part of my evaluation phase of producing my overall project. Prezzi is an online presentation maker. It allowed me to create fun and easy presentations rather then writing an essay which can become tedious. Using Prezzi helped me to create presentations that kept me interested in the work.

Prezzi was easy to use and it was also free. If I ever did get stuck then there was a tutorial video for me to click on. The simplicity of the site meant Prezzi’s could be made quickly and saved time. It also meant that I learnt about new webpages in order to help me evaluate my products as well as gathering research for my ancillary texts, music video and evaluation.

Prezzi’s were easy to  embed into my blog post and were also very quick to upload.

Go Animate:

Go Animate is a presentation webpage which I used during the research and planning phase of my construction of my media text. Go Animate was easy to use and allowed me to create fun projects that helped me instead of creating an essay form. I liked using Go Animates as they provided me a visual analysis of research which made me understand something more.

Go Animate was free and simple to use. If I ever needed help I could ask for help via a button or maybe by watching the video tutorial. I liked the simplicity and the layout of the site. I could simply choose a layout and then simply edited the text so the characters could then speak what I had written.

The one problem of using Go Animate is that some of the characters had to be bought. The ones I used were free but, for example, I wanted to use one that wasn’t free I would have to pay using a credit card to use those characters or to use a certain location which would of sometimes worked better then the ones I used.

Adobe Premier:

I used the editing system during the construction of my production piece.

Using the editing suite was hard at first because I didn’t want to break the computer as they are very expensive and take a lot of time to construct.

When it came to editing I had a very basic understanding to get me started but had to rely again on YouTube tutorials or by asking for help from Ray the media technician.

I had a couple of problems with adobe premier as my edit suite might not have been available and this was because of how expensive the editing computer was. They were only a small number of editing suites available and therefore everyone was wanting to use them. I had to divide my time well in order to get the edit suite when nobody else wanted to use them.

Another problem was that I did come to editing once and someone had moved my file from my work area into their work area. I thought the editing system had lost my work but we located the file and moved it back but some of the clips had been deleted due to the fact that my file had been moved.

Sony HDV 1080i 6.1 mega pixels:

I used a Sony HDV camera during the filming and editing stages of my construction. I used this camera as I wanted to use a better quality of camera to get a better sharper quality of picture.

These cameras were hardly ever in use so I never had to wait for availability which helped a lot whenever I needed to loan one over the weekend. These cameras were also very easy to use and I didn’t need any guidance.

One of the main problems in using this is that it required a tape so whenever I wanted to upload my footage onto the edit suite it would often take a long time and I would have to sit and watch my footage as it uploaded. This would be a problem as if I had a short space of time to edit I would often have to wait for the footage to be uploaded and required the camera to upload the footage via tape.

Another problem was the size of the camera as it was quite big and required a lot of effort to carry around. This was a problem as if I needed to film so footage at the top of a steep hill I would have to carry this with me and because one of my locations was a natural location the camera would be hard to carry from location to location. The size of the camera also meant that I couldn’t film long shots within my blank wall location as there wasn’t enough space to step back to capture a long shot.
